Having finished in the lower half of the Championship last season, Millwall and Watford start 2024/25 with renewed hope. Millwall, who were 13th, two places ahead of Watford, will play host in this match. Read on for our preview and prediction.

In recent times Millwall have dominated this fixture and will seek to extend the same here. Two straight losses to close their preseason regime will, however, call for some improvement. The Lions were the most in form team in the final five rounds of the Championship last season.

Neill Harris will want to tap on to that run that had Millwall on five straight wins to wrap up 2023/24. Among the teams they defeated were champions Leicester City, and Millwall kept four clean sheets in the five matches. In the last two seasons, Millwall have gone unbeaten in this encounter.

Watford’s quest for a return to the Premier League failed badly last season as they could only manage 13 wins. Finishing 17 points below the playoff positions was clearly an underperformance and this time there are higher targets at Vicarage Road.

Two wins only in their seven off-season friendly matches did little to ease the pressures. Key to Watford’s underwhelming season was the instability in management. A lack of solidity in defence and a poor run away from home remain factors that must be addressed to change fortunes.

The Hornets failed to win any of the last four away league matches, losing the final two. Tom Cleverley injected some energy in the team, though it was a bit late. He will hope to push his charges to do better in the new season.
