Qualifier Mikail Yymer takes on unseeded Roberto Carballes Baena in the Firenze Open quarter finals. The winner of this match takes on either seventh seeded Alexander Bublik or unseeded JJ Wolf for a place in the final. Ymer started this week ranked 99th in the world but up to 83rd in the live rankings. A win in this quarter final will take him up to 79th but still 12 places below his career high achieved two years ago. Winning this match will take him into his third ATP Tour semi-final of the year. The others were in Montpellier in January/February and then Washington in August. This week he's had to qualify for this event an was a set down to Borna Gojo before fighting back to reach the main draw. The first round saw him beat  Tim van Rijthoven (for the loss of three games) and then knocked out fifth seed Aslan Karatsev in three sets. He won the first set 6-1, lost the second on a tie-break and then won the decider for the loss of just one game.

World nunber 80 Roberto Carballes Baena can reach a career high ranking if winning this match. Beating Ymer would take him up to 70th in the live rankings. This is his third ATP Tour quarter final of the year, the other two both being in clay rather than hard court tournaments. A lot of his year has been spent on the Challenger Tour with two titles won and a couple of runner-up spots all in clay court tournaments. His most recent title was achieved in Sevilla last month. This week has seen him showing good form on a hard court surface. Wins have come against Daniel Elahi Galan and then an impressive win over second seeded Matteo Berrettini after losing the first set.
