Mikael Ymer and David Goffin will square off in the second round of the ATP Tournament in Marseille on Thursday, with both players looking to build on their form this year. Since his entry to the ATP a few years ago, Ymer has shown that he possesses a great deal of talent, along with pace and power, which makes for a lethal combination. He started 2023 in decent fashion, reaching the quarter-final of the Adelaide 2 tournament in January but was eventually beaten by 31-seed Soon Woo Kwon. Unfortunately he was unable to carry that momentum into the Australian open later in the month, where he bowed out in the first round but bounced back strongly in the Ottignies Louvain CH, narrowly missing out on the title after losing to this same opponent (6-4, 6-1). The Swede will be looking for revenge in this one but will find it difficult against a wily veteran of the game that knows how to get a result when needed.

The Belgian 41-seed got his year off to a good start, reaching the quarter-final in Auckland, and despite an excellent first set, he was unable to overcome Richard Gasquet, with the match eventually ending (1-6, 6-1,6-1). Goffin was forced to miss the Australian Open through injury but came back in Ottinies Louvain with his first challenger tournament win for the year. In the round of 32 in this tournament, Goffin put on an excellent showing against Lukas Klein, winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-4), and he will be confident that he can carry that form into this match and repeat his win over this opponent from last month.
