Caroline Wozniacki, the world number 73, returns to the Olympic stage to face world number 87 Mayar Sherif in Paris. They will square off in the first round with the winner taking on Laura Siegemund or Danielle Collins next. Here’s a look at their first career meeting, with a prediction for the match.

Sherif is making her second appearance at the Olympics representing Egypt. She made her debut in the last edition in Tokyo but was eliminated in the first round. With this year’s tournament being held on clay, the 28-year-old will be confident of winning her first Olympic match.

Sherif is a superb clay performer and has won close to 200 matches on the surface in her career. This year, all 24 of her wins have been on clay, resulting in five finals across the tour and challenger circuits.

Caroline Wozniacki hasn’t had form on her side on her return to the tour this year. The former world number one will hope her experience propels her to a winning start here. Wozniacki returned to the tour this year after making a U-turn on retirement in 2023 and has so far compiled an 11-11 record.

She has struggled the most on clay where she has played for the first time since 2019. A one-time major winner, Wozniacki has featured three times previously at the Summer Games.

She made her debut in Beijing in 2008 then appeared in Rio in 2016. In all three appearances, she won in the first round and will hope this is the case again in Paris.
