Eighth seed J.J. Wolf and unseeded Maxime Cressy have a Thursday date in the second round at the Atlanta Open. The two Americans are set to battle for a quarterfinal slot. Cressy has struggled this season, registering a 9-18 win-loss record; he has lost five of seven outings on hard court. This poor run has seen him plummet from being ranked in the top 40 to out of the top 100. He has however climbed back up the live ranking to 95th after his opening round win. The American ended a three-match losing run by defeating compatriot Alex Michelsen in straight sets. He and Wolf have played each other twice, with his only win coming four seasons ago. This was on hard court in the challenger circuit and he will hope for the same outcome here.

Wolf won the last time he met Cressy. This was on indoor hard court in Florence 10 months ago. He will fancy his chances again as he has performed better than Cressy despite also struggling. The American has compiled a 19-16 record in 2023 with the majority of his wins (seven) coming on hard court. His latest win came in the first round where he defeated qualifier Jason Jung in straight sets. He achieved the victory in dominant fashion, dropping just three games to win in one hour and 13 minutes. This saw him advance to this round for the first time in what is his third appearance in Atlanta. He is up one place to 45th in the live ranking. A win here will set up a quarterfinal tie with either third-seed Daniel Evans or unseeded Dominik Koepfer.
