Max Purcell and Thanasi Kokkinakis, both unseeded, will meet in the first round of the 2024 Washington Open. A second-round match against 14th seed Aleksandar Vukic awaits the winner in this game. This is the first match between Purcell and Kokkinakis at tour level and here’s our look at the stats and a prediction.
Max Purcell is having an inconsistent year. There was a brief spell, during the grass campaign in which he regained form even producing a runner-up finish in Eastbourne. He has since regressed and lost three times in his last five outings.
The Australian, who is seeking his first main draw victory in Washington, is coming off a quarter-final finish in Atlanta. Purcell will start the week in 59th place in the ATP.
Thanasi Kokkinakis defeated his compatriot in their first encounter which was on a hard court. This, however, was six years ago in the challenger circuit. Though that might hold little weight for this coming encounter, the older Australian will nonetheless expect to double his advantage.
He has compiled a significantly better record than Purcell, which boosts his chances. The 28-year-old has put up a 21-16 record playing in both the tour and challenger circuits. Kokkinakis last took to the court during the grass campaign with his most recent match being in Wimbledon.
Currently ranked 91st in the live ranking, Kokkinakis debuted in Washington last year and exited in the second round. The last time he played in America, he won the Sarasota Challenger back in April.
