Nicolas Jarry is the 21st seed for this Italian Open but needs to rediscover his form from earlier in the year. He faces Matteo Arnaldi in round two with the winner facing either wild card Stefano Napolitano or lucky loser Juncheng Shang. All of which means that there are no seeded players standing between Jarry and a place in the last 16 of this outdoor clay court tournament. Jarry is the world number 24 but only 35th in the ATP Live Race. He showed some good form on clay in South America earlier this year. The final was reached in Buenos Aires and the last eight in Santiago. It's not gone so well in Europe with no matches won in three tournaments. His record in the Italian Open isn't stellar either and receiving a first round bye saw him get past that stage in Rome for the first time. He leads Arnaldi 2-0 in previous meetings but this is their first match on clay.

Matteo Arnaldi will have the home support in this match. He's up to 36th in the live rankings and that's only a place below the career-high he achieved at the start of April 2024. He's up to 45th in the Live ATP Race after beating lucky loser Harold Mayot in the first round of this Italian Open. He had to come from a set down to win that match though. Arnaldi has had mixed results on the European clay court tour so far with his best run being a quarter-final in Barcelona and that included knocking out the seeded Sebastian Baez. A win here will see him into the third round in Rome for the first time and we believe this match will go to three sets.
