Before this week, Damm had never won a main draw match in an ATP Tour clay court tournament. He had to win two qualifiers to get into the main draw, one against Cristian Garin going to three sets.
Round one of the main draw saw him beat Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. That has taken him to a career-high 113th in the live rankings, 85 places below his opponent. All of his five matches on clay this year have seen a tie-break played.
Jakub Mensik was a quarter-finalist in Madrid last year. He is playing in his first clay court tournament of the year and will hope to be as successful as he's been on other surfaces in 2026. One outdoor hard court title has been won in Auckland and he was a semi-finalist in Doha.
