Three years after their last meeting, Marta Kostyuk and Liudmila Samsonova get to face off again, this time at WTA Guadalajara. The two will be meeting for the fifth time in a match dominated by Samsonova. Twice in the last three meetings between these two, the matches were settled in three sets, and our prediction backs the same here.

Top seed Marta Kostyuk is a favorite to go all the way here in Guadalajara and approaches this match without having spent a minute on the court. After her first round bye, her second round opponent, Taylor Townsend, withdrew.

Here Kostyuk will have the best chance to avenge her earlier four defeats to this opponent. A great season she’s had, the Ukrainian gets here on a 36-9 record, with titles at Rouen and Madrid.

Samsonova has a winning record against Kostyuk that she will be looking to extend here. In their four previous meetings, the Russian posted straight wins.

The latest of them was, however, three years ago, and here she will find a very different player in Kostyuk. Samsonova comes here on a losing run, having compiled an 18-21 record for the season.

Most of her runs this season ended in the early rounds, and she hasn’t progressed past the quarter-finals in any. In her last outing, Samsonova saw off Kayla Day in three sets to reach the last eight here for the first time.
