She arrived in Madrid after triumphing in Rouen for her first title of the season. That momentum has carried on in Spain, where she has set a new career-high performance at a WTA 1000 event.

Kostyuk, who defeated Potapova in Madrid last season, has moved up to 20th in the live ranking. To advance to the last four, Kostyuk outlasted Linda Noskova, winning in straight sets.

Anastasia Potapova had a more complete quarter-final battle. Facing off with former world number one Karolina Pliskova, Potapova won via a decider after she lost the second set via a tiebreak.
