The league title may not be on the line in this game, but the rivalry will be as fierce as ever.

Marseille - PSG: Form Analysis

To say Marseille's season has a Jekyll and Hyde quality to it is an understatement. At home, Marseille have been the best team in Ligue 1. Unbeaten in their 13 home games, they have won eight and drawn five this season, conceding just seven, the joint-second best defensive record in Ligue 1, while their 24 goals are the 2nd best behind PSG (33) and Rennes (28). In contrast, on the road Marseille have lost seven of their 13 games, winning just twice and drawing four times. They have also lost three of their last five away games, drawing one and winning one. That discrepancy in form is a large reason why Marseille, despite that home record, lies 7th in the Ligue 1 table, three points behind Lens in sixth and level on points with Rennes who lie below them on goal difference.

Ligue 1 leaders Paris St Germain seem set for yet another league title win. The mega-rich side from the capital have a 12 point lead over Brest in second place in the table and a +23 better goal difference than the second placed team. Incredibly, PSG's away record is even better than Marseille's home record with the leaders having won nine and drawn four of their thirteen away games, conceding just nine goals in the process and scoring an impressive 29 goals. They have won four of their last five away games, drawing the other. Far better form that at home where they have drawn three and won one of the last four. They have won six penalties in their 13 away games and are unbeaten in their last 21 Ligue 1 games, winning 15 and drawing 6.

Marseille & PSG Squad Analysis

Marseille's defense has had a number of injuries to contend with in recent times. Right back Jonathan Clauss is out along with Amir Murillo, Samuel Gigot, Bamo Meite, Leonardo Balerdi and Ulisses Garcia. This does leave Marseille severely understaffed in defense with Quentin Merlin and Chancel Mbemba their only two fit specialist defenders, though Geoffrey Kondogbia could drop into a defensive role while Leo Jousselin and Roggerio Nyakossi could make the step up from their B team. Midfielders Valentin Rongier and Jean Onana are also ruled out, while winger Ismaila Sarr will also be out with a hamstring injury. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been one of their top performers this season, netting 11 goals in 26 Ligue 1 games so far this season, as well as another 11 in European competition.

Similarly, Paris St Germain also have injury absentees in defense too. Milan Skriniar, Presnel Kimpembe, Layvin Kurzawa and club captain Marquinhos are all out injured, while young striker Bradley Barcola picked up an injury when playing for France Under-23s last week, and he joins winger Marco Asensio who is also out with an injury. With three of their first choice back four on the sidelines, Marseille may hope to profit from the lack of options PSG have in defense, but they will also have to contend with the brilliant Kylian Mbappe who, in his final season with PSG has scored 24 goals in 24 Ligue 1 games and a total of 38 goals in 37 matches for the club this season - despite not finishing 90 minutes that often under Luis Enrique.

Marseille - PSG Key Points

  1. Marseille have picked up 29 of their 39 points at home this season, the best record in Ligue 1. However, they have drawn three of their last five at the Orange Velodrome.
  2. Paris St Germain have picked up 31 points from 39 available on the road this season, comfortably the best away record in the league. They are unbeaten in all 13 away matches this season.
  3. Both teams have scored in 62% of PSG's games this season and 65% of their games have seen Over 2.5 goals.
  4. Paris St Germain have scored 15 more goals in Ligue 1 (62) than the team with the next best scoring record (Monaco with 47). Defensively only Nice and Brest have conceded fewer goals (20 compared to 23).
  5. Marseille have faced Paris St Germain 88 times in total, winning 32, losing 36 and drawing 20. Paris St Germain have won on each of the last four occasions the teams have met. Marseille have not beaten PSG at home since a 3-0 win in 2011/12.
  6. Paris St Germain were 4-0 winners when the teams met at the Parc des Princes earlier this season. Achraf Hakimi (8), Randal Kolo Muani (37) and Goncalo Ramos (47,89) handing the home side a comfortable win.

Our Marseille vs PSG Prediction

The 0 has to go when Marseille faces Paris St Germain on Sunday night in Ligue 1, but the question is, who will be coming out on top of this game? Unfortunately, I think there's one piece of data which is crucial to this fixture and that is Marseille's lengthy defensive injury list. With so many key defenders missing and coming up against the best attack in France, and a team who have beaten them regularly in recent times, our prediction here is for Paris St Germain to take the victory.

Marseille vs PSG - Other Interesting Predictions

Kylian Mbappe (Paris St Germain) to score at any time

Kylian Mbappe's phenomenal goalscoring record for Paris St Germain cannot go understated. His hat-trick in the last game against Montpellier took his tally to 24 goals in 24 games this season, many of which he played only 45-60 minutes in. He has added 14 more in cup and European competitions and against that under-strength Marseille defense, he looks a great bet to score at some point in the game. Our second prediction therefore is for Kylian Mbappe to score at any time.
