Czech right hander Marie Bouzkova faces Canada's Rebecca Marino in the first round of the WTA Bogota 250 event on Monday. The 25-year-old Czech star is ranked 39 in the world at present, down from her high of 24th, but at age 25 still has time on her side to improve. This will be her first tournament on clay of the 2024 season, a surface which historically she has not enjoyed the best of records on, but where she did show signs of improvement in 2023. Bouzkova is the top seed in the tournament but comes into this tournament with just three wins in her past ten matchs and has won just five of her 13 games so far in 2024.
Her opponent is Canada's Rebecca Marino, the 148th ranked player in the world at present, although she has been as high as 38 in her career. At 33 years of age, she is yet to win on the main tour but has shown well on the challenge and minor tours in her career. She's won 16 of her 22 matches so far this season and comes into this match with six wins in her last ten games. However, it has to be noted that the quality of opponent that Marino has faced is far poorer than that of Bouszkova (252.68 for the Canadian, compared to 66.69 for the Czech Number 1 seed). This will be both ladies first game on clay this season and it promises to be an intriguing test of the top seed against her big-serving opponent.

Marie Bouzkova - Rebecca Marino Key Points
- Top seed Bouzkova best performance this year came in the ASB Classic in Auckland in January, where she reached the quarterfinal before losing to Elina Svitolina (6-0, 6-3).
- Rebecca Marino's best performance this season was arguably qualifying for the Australian Open, where she lost 6-2, 6-4 to Jessica Pegula in the First Round. However she did win the W100 Irapuato tournament in February defeating Jule Niemeier 6-1, 6-2 in the final.
- The Czech top seed Bouzkova has lost her last two games, losing to Anastasia Potapova (7-5, 6-1) in the 2nd Round at Indian Wells, and then suffering a first round loss to China's Lin Zhu in the Miami Open just over a week ago.
- Marino also qualified for the ATX Open in Austin, losing in the first round to American Sachia Vickery (6-2, 6-4). She has lost her only game on clay this season, losing in Round 1 of the San Luis Potosi Open last week to compatriot Marina Stakusic 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
- The two ladies have met twice previously. Both on hard courts and they have both won one match each. Marino defeated Bouzkova 7-5,6-1 in the Qatar Open in Feb 2023, while Bouzkova defeated Marino 6-1, 6-3 in the 2022 Australian Open first round.
