The ATP National Bank Open at Toronto round of 32 pits American Marcos Giron against the fifth-seeded Holger Rune. The winner of this matchup will go on to face either Tommy Paul or Francisco Cerundolo in the round of 16. The 20-year-old Rune is riding high in 2023 and has recently achieved his current career high ranking of sixth in the ATP. It’s been a phenomenal year for the Dane who is establishing himself along with Carlos Alcaraz as likely the two best young players in the game today. His results speak for themselves with a record of 39 wins and 15 losses in this calendar year. Rune finished as the runner-up in Acapulco, Monte Carlo and Rome as well as being crowned champion of the BMW open at Munich. He also made a run to the quarter-finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Rune comes into this matchup on the back of losing in his last three outings following defeats to Alcaraz, Riedi and Gasquet.
