Second seed Emma Navarro takes on qualifier Magadalena Frech for a place in the Hobart International quarter finals. The possible opponents in the last eight are either ninth seed Tatjana Maria or lucky loser Viktorija Tomova. Navarro was ranked a career high 31st at the start of this tournament and can climb up to 30th if beating Frech. The American has risen over 100 places in the past year, mainly due to three ITF tournaments won on clay courts. There has been success on hard courts which is the surface being played on in Hobart. Two ITF hard court titles were won by Navarro in 2023. Last week saw her reach the semi-finals in Auckand, eventually losing to Coco Gauff who went on to win the title. This week began with a win over unseeded Clara Burel but Navarro needed to come from a set down to get that victory.
Magdalena Frech was in 72nd place when this tournament began and that's nine positions below her career high achieved in November 2023. The Pole is up to 68th in the live rankings after winning three matches to get to this stage. Last week saw her lose in the first round in Auckland. The 26-year-old had to go through the qualifying rounds to get into the main draw. Seeded fourth she did without dropping a set and losing only four games in both wins. The first round in the main draw saw Frech get off to a terrible start losing the first set to Sara Sorribes Tormo without winning a game. A good recovery was made though with only five games being lost in the next two sets. Frech leads Navarro 1-0 in previous meetings, beating her in three sets at last year's US Open. Navarro looks to be in the slightly better form and can win this.
