Fourth seed Magda Linette will play fifth seed Viktoriya Tomova in the quarter-finals of this year’s Prague Open. Heading into this Wednesday match, here’s our analysis and a prediction.

Magda Linette has never lost against Tomova, winning three times with one of her successes coming in this very tournament. That was two seasons ago on her way to securing her best finish here – a quarter-final result. The Pole will therefore be confident of winning this and advancing to the last four for the first time.

It is her second appearance here and Linette has won both of her rounds without dropping a set. After overcoming the qualifier Mona Barthel in the first round, she would outduel Rebeka Masarova by the loss of seven games. Now 47th in the live ranking, Linette has improved her record to 18-18.

Viktoriya Tomova has also won both of her matches here without losing a set. She defeated the wildcard Renata Jamrichova in the first round and then Jana Fett to advance to the last eight. The Bulgarian is making her third successive appearance in Prague and has now set her best result by moving into this round.

Though she has also lacked consistency, especially on hard courts, Tomova is having a better season than Linette. She has compiled a 26-23 record, highlighted by two semi-final finishes at tour level. Advancing to this round sees her set a new career-high world ranking.

She is now placed 45th in the live ranking after making a four-place leap. The winner here will play Ella Seidel, Ena Shibahara, Eva Lys or Linda Noskova for a place in the championship match
