Liudmila Samsonova, the 11th seed at this year’s Wuhan Open, will take on the unseeded Magda Linette in the first round. This will be their third meeting this year and the winner will advance to play Katie Boulter or Lesia Tsurenko. Below is a prediction of this match plus the stats.

Liudmila Samsonova has had a difficult year, finding it hard to produce consistent wins. She has won just four more matches than the 22 she lost and is currently on a three-match skid.

The Russian had an unfortunate return to Beijing where she reached the final last year and was defeated in her tournament opener. But with a dominant record against Linette, she will be confident of a winning start on her Wuhan debut.

Samsonova, who is currently placed 23rd in the WTA, has won all three previous meetings with Linette. Two of her wins were achieved this season.

Magda Linette had a better showing in Beijing compared to Samsonova and will arrive for this match confident of victory. The Pole made it to the third round and one of her wins came against world number six Jasmine Paolini.

Linette was in spectacular form against one of the year’s form players. After losing four games in the first set, she produced a defensive masterclass in the second and won 6-0.

Linette, who has a third-round finish in Wuhan in 2017 as her best result here, has compiled a 27-24 record. Though she has lacked consistency, the 32-year-old is having one of her best seasons.

She has contested two tour finals for the first time since 2019 and won in Prague to end a four-year wait for a tour title. The former WTA top 20 player starts the week having dropped two places to 47th in the live ranking.
