Liudmila Samsonova and Anastasia Potapova, both unseeded, will meet in the opening round in Stuttgart. The winner will then play either Marketa Vondrousova or Donna Vekic in the second round. Liudmila Samsonova is a former Stuttgart semifinalist, achieving this feat two seasons ago during her debut tournament. She will hope to mount another deep run as she plots to take hold of her season. The Russian has struggled to get going and in 12 matches so far this year, has managed just four wins. Currently on a three-match losing run, Samsonova was last on the court three weeks ago in Miami. The world number 17 is a strong performer on clay and defeated Potapova in their only encounter on the surface back in 2018.

Anastasia Potapova won the last time she was paired up against Samsonova. This was back in 2020 on an indoor hard court in St. Petersburg. She will be hoping for the same outcome as she seeks to snap a two-match skid. Potapova, who is returning to Stuttgart for a second successive year, lost in the first round in Miami in her last outing. This was a disappointing performance as she had just made the quarterfinals at Indian Wells before heading to Miami. Potapova has fared much better than Samsonova this year but she has by no means been dominant. She has won 10 of 17 matches and hasn’t yet gone past the quarterfinals at an event. Currently down to 42nd in the live ranking, Potapova is defending 185 points won here last year in her run to the semis.
