World number 231 Amanda Anisimova and 17th seed Liudmila Samsonova will square off in the second round at the French Open. The winner of this third meeting between the two will play Cristina Bucsa or Elisabetta Coccaretto next. Liudmila Samsonova is seeking her first win in this fixture. Victory will also see her advance to the third round here for the first time. The Russian lost in the second round last year to record her best result in this major. A four-time tour champion, Samsonova is a strong clay court player and has compiled a 105-68 record on the surface in her career. Five of her nine wins this year have also come on clay. Anisimova has had a rough time returning to the tour after missing eight months of last year’s campaign. She has compiled a 6-5 record and has lost three times in five outings on clay. The 22-year-old put a stop to a three-match losing run by defeating Rebecca Sramkova in the first round. She won in straight sets but lost 10 games in the qualifier. The inactiveness from last season saw the former world number 21 drop out of the WTA top 400 for the first time since 2016. She has however gradually moved in the right direction and is now up to 185th in the live ranking.
