Unseeded pair Jan-Lennard Struff and Luciano Darderi face each other in round one of the Halle Open. The winner of this match will be up against either sixth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas or wild card Henri Squire in round two of this grass court tournament. Struff is hoping for a better week after getting to the last eight in Stuttgart but then having to pull out due to injury. All seems ok now and the world number 41 will hope for a good run this week in Halle. He's down to 44th in the live rankings as he's defending points earned when reaching the last 16 here in 2023. Struff has won one title this year, that was a clay court tournament held in Munich. He has reached one grass court final in the past, getting to the title decider in Stuttgart last year.

Luciano Darderi is a career-high 34th in the rankings so is in with a chance of being seeded at Wimbledon. The Italian owes his position in the rankings to his performances on clay and recently won a Challenger Tour title on that surface. He's not so good when it comes to playing on grass courts. His one appearance at Wimbledon was last year and he lost in the first qualifying round. This is his first grass court tournament of the year. His only win on this surface came in an ITF tournament played three years ago when beating a player ranked 712th at the time. We go for Struff to win this in straight sets.
