Wildcard Pierre Hugues Herbert and unseeded Luca Van Assche will meet on Thursday in the Moselle Open quarterfinals. Luca Van Assche progressed to this round at the expense of Stan Wawrinka who was forced to retire from their second-round showdown. The match came to an end after the conclusion of the second set which Van Assche won after a tiebreaker. It was the Frenchman’s 32nd victory of the season and continued his rich spell on indoor hard court surfaces. Van Assche has won 13 of 19 matches on indoor hard courts and this has resulted in one challenger title on the surface. He is now up four places to 66th in the live ranking.

Pierre Hugues Herbert has also been in excellent form on indoor hard court surfaces. He defeated Gijs Brouwer in straight sets in the last round to register his 14th win on the surface. Herbert, who is yet to drop a set in this tournament, has claimed 20 victories in 2023. The former world number 36 will fancy his chances of getting the better of his younger compatriot. Herbert is making his 11th appearance in Metz but it is only now that he has qualified for the last eight. His run to this round has catapulted him up a massive 57 places to 287th in the live ranking. The winner will proceed to battle either Karen Khachanov or Alexander Shevchenko for a place in the final.
