Liverpool will look to go three wins out of three in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) when they host Villarreal, who have traditionally struggled against English sides. This matchday three fixture at Anfield on Tuesday between the 5th-placed ‘Reds’ and the 14th-placed ‘Yellow Submarine’ could test the defences of both teams.
Liverpool are one of the nine clubs to have won both matchdays in the UCL league phase, although they have struggled defensively having conceded four goals. The ‘Reds’ edged out Atletico Madrid 2-1 at home and won 6-3 away at LASK last week in a crazy encounter.
Villarreal started their league phase campaign with a 3-2 loss at Borussia Dortmund but have shown their adaptability by winning 3-1 against Napoli last week. The Spanish visitors haven’t quite set tongues wagging with their results but can be a difficult proposition on their day. Will this game bring the best out of both teams and turn out to be another thriller? Read more for our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

Liverpool - Villarreal: Form Analysis
Stretched to the limit by a nine-man Brentford, Liverpool won 2-1 on the road last weekend in the English Premier League (EPL). It was a fourth win in their last five competitive games (L1), as the ‘Reds’ continue to push towards the EPL's top four.
Liverpool’s UCL wins this season have extended their impressive run in the competition. They have 19 wins from their last 22 UCL group stage/league phase games (L3).
Liverpool have won 15 of their last 16 league phase games at home.
Villarreal could only draw 0-0 at home against Elche at the weekend in La Liga. The match was a drab follow-up to their 3-1 home win over Napoli last matchday in the UCL competition.
That result ended a seven-game losing streak in the UCL for the ‘Yellow Submarine’, including a 3-2 defeat at Dortmund on matchday one. The challenge is to overcome their poor form on the road, as Villarreal lost three of their last four trips in all competitions (W1) and have also been beaten in their last six UEFA away matches.

Liverpool & Villarreal Squad Analysis
Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong are sidelined due to injuries and could be out for a longer period. Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, Vitezslav Jaros and Giovanni Leoni are also out of contention due to long-term injuries.
Liverpool are likely to be stretched at the right-back position in their 4-2-3-1 formation. Ronald Araujo could once against deputise there, while Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola, and Florian Wirtz are set to lead their attack.
Barcola hit a hat-trick against LASK in Liverpool’s last UCL game.
Villarreal also have a number of injury absences, with the likes of Tajon Buchanan and Gerard Moreno out for a longer period, while Peter Gulacsi missed their last UCL match due to a personal issue. Nicolas Pepe is also an injury concern.
The Spaniards have usually lined up in 4-4-2 formation, and Pepe’s absence puts pressure on Georges Mikautadze to deliver. He has three goals and two assists this season, including one goal versus Napoli. Ayoze Perez assisted once in that game and will look to add to his count of three assists this season.

Our Liverpool vs Villarreal Prediction
Liverpool are slowly picking up momentum, and their wins in both league phase games are a case in point. Even their form at Anfield has improved over time, although their defensive concerns remain. Villarreal have won one of their two matches in this competition, but an indifferent run of form heading into this game is a concern as they chase a second victory of the league phase.
Villarreal’s last six UCL matches have averaged 4.0 goals per game, and their ability to test Liverpool’s defence could be on display here. Our Liverpool vs Villarreal prediction is BTTS.
Liverpool vs Villarreal Alternative Predictions
Liverpool wins
While they continue to divide opinion, Liverpool are racking up victories consistently. Four wins from their last five competitive matches, as well as in both league phase matches this season, suggest they are primed toad to that count here.
Bardley Barcola Over 0.5 Assists
Bradley Barcola was unlucky to have not scored against Brentford at the weekend in the Premier League. He hit the goal post but picked up an assist to go with the hat-trick he scored against LASK last week in this competition. There could be more action from the French forward. Back him to find an assist.
