Eleventh seed Liudmila Samsonova and the qualifier Laura Siegemund will face off on Thursday at the Zhengzhou Open. The winner of this second-round tie will then advance to play unseeded Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals. Liudmila Samsonova is coming off an impressive run in Beijing where she finished as runner-up. She will hope for another deep run and possibly win her first title of the year. The Russian has played in three finals thus far and all three have been on hard courts. Hard courts are also where the majority of her 33 victories have been registered. Samsonova has compiled a 25-14 record on hard courts and has won seven of her last 10 matches on the surface. The four-time tour champion won both previous meetings with Siegemund with one being on hard court. Ranked 16th in the WTA, Samsonova defeated Tatjana Maria 2-0 in the first round.

Laura Siegemund will seek her first victory in this series and her current form will have her confident of this. Siegemund has also won seven of her last 10 matches and has been at her best this season on hard courts. The German has compiled a 27-16 record thus far this year with 20 of her wins coming on hard courts. This form saw her advance to her first tour final in six years as she finished as runner-up in Warsaw. Siegemund, who is making her debut in Zhengzhou, defeated home favourite Zhu Lin in straight sets in the first round. She is now up nine places to 104th in the live ranking.
