The winner of this second career meeting between these two will play Zhu Lin or Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarter-finals. Leylah Fernandez was in excellent form in the first round against Sara Sorribes Tormo. She won their fourth career meeting in an hour and two minutes, allowing Tormo just two games the entire time. The Canadian former US Open finalist defeated Golubic three seasons ago to lift the title in Monterrey. Fernandez has now tied her record at 12-12 and is unbeaten on grass. Viktorija Golubic has also boosted her world ranking by advancing to this round. The former world number 35 is now up nine places to 69th in the live ranking. Golubic, who began her third appearance here in the qualifying rounds, defeated fellow qualifier Camila Osorio in the first round. This showdown wasn’t as smooth as Fernandez’s and lasted nearly two hours with Golubic needing a decider to win. The win was also the first time that the Swiss player had won a main draw match in Birmingham. Golubic has also had a rocky campaign and only once has she won multiple main draw matches at a tour event. She has compiled a 10-9 record with three of her wins coming on grass.
