Leicester Tigers are assured a place in the European Rugby Champions Cup next season. They won’t be in this season’s English Premiership play-offs though. The Tigers are eighth in the table and play their final league fixture at home to Exeter Chiefs who are fifth and need a win to keep their play-off hopes alive. Leicester have won eight of their 17 fixtures and will finish the season in eighth place regardless of the result of this match. Their most recent league game saw them lose 31-22 at Sale Sharks and that made it three straight losses for the Tigers. Home league form has been mixed with four wins but the same number of defeats.
Exeter Chiefs are fifth in the English Premiership but need a top-four finish to qualify for the end-of-season play-offs. They come into this final game two points behind Sale Sharks (who are away to Saracens) and five behind Bath who are home to leaders Northampton. Exeter have to win this match and hope the other results go their way. The Chiefs beat Harlequins 52-26 at home last weekend but it’s their away form that explains why they aren’t in the top four. While seven matches have been won at home, just three out of eight have been won on the road. Only Newcastle Falcons have a worse away record. They did win their last away match at Gloucester but had lost the previous two at Saracens and Sale. The Chiefs have it all to play for though and we believe they can get a vital win but will it be enough?
