Beatrice Ricci makes her tour debut in Rome and will play world number 83 Laura Siegemund in first round qualifying. Siegemund is making her fourth career appearance in Rome. This comes after a two-year hiatus from the event. In each of her previous three appearances, the German participated in the main draw. The 36-year-old arrives here after a first-round exit in Madrid as a qualifier. It was the first time in five appearances that she had failed to win at least one match at the tournament. Siegemund has compiled a 13-9 record and six of her wins have come in nine outings on clay. She arrives in Rome having dropped three places to 86th in the live ranking. Siegemund has produced quarterfinal finishes in Bogota and Adelaide this season.

Beatrice Ricci is making her tour debut with this match. She has been solely competing in the ITF circuit where she has compiled a 12-7 record and has won one title in Antalya. Ricci has however struggled in her most recent fixtures and is on a two-match losing run. She was defeated in qualifying at the W35 Santa Margherita di Pula in her last outing. Ricci fancies playing on clay and will hope to be able to hold her own against the seasoned Siegemund. Of her 65 career victories, 41 have come on clay. The Italian, who is playing in Rome as a wildcard, is placed at number 618 in the live ranking. The winner here will take on either Sacha Vickery or Julia Riera next.
