Here we go! Stage 17 is one of the last two big stages in the mountains (the other is 20) where this race will be won or lost. Our prediction is that this is going to be a huge day in the standings for the General Classification hopefuls.
Thursday's an Individual Time Trial, so those who have hopes of finishing on the podium but are not as good at time trialing are going to forced to attack to make this an exciting watch.
Joao Almeida is as good as Jonas Vingegaard when it comes to time trials so he is going to have to attack, try and take some time back. It was only the race leader that he was unable to shrug off on L'Angliru.
Tom Pidcock has shown himself to be a strong rider in the mountains but he is yet to match that kind of level in a time trial. He needs to start to take some time back.
Just behind the front three is Jai Hindley. He knows what it takes to win a Grand Tour, the 2022 Giro Champion. He has ground to make up and like the pair above, he needs to attack in the mountains.
Felix Gall is a better time triallist when the terrain is uphill. He put in some huge attacks on the second to last mountain day in the Tour de France, so this might be the day that he puts the hammer down.

- At 143.2km, Stage 17 is one of the shorter stages of La Vuelta.
- They climb almost 1,200m in about the last 20km with the climb to the finish starting at almost 12%.
- Jai Hindley’s chief lieutenant Giulio Pellizzari is fifth overall and riding like a demon. His position can help his team leader to break the other teams.
- Hindley is already a Grand Tour champion, but Thursday’s time trial is probably going to see him lose time. As such, this stage needs to see him gain on his podium rivals.

Up to this point, the majority of the mountain stages have seen the big contenders happy enough to follow one another without too much attacking. With just two left in the big hills, that is going to have to change and those who are weaker time triallists have to attack to gain time here to make up for losing it on Thursday!
That is going to make this a massive free for all which will be great entertainment. With Visma now missing Victor Campernarts, it makes it more difficult for Jonas Vingegaard, while UAE's legs will start to go which doesn't help Joao Almeida. We'll take a chance on Red Bull playing the right cards. Our La Vuelta Stage 17 prediction is Jai Hindley each way.
