La Vuelta returns from a rest day with a very similar-looking terrain to Stage 9. There are a few hills to be climbed before the peloton is tested by a Category 1 climb to the finish. It seems likely to be the usual breakaway suspects to discuss here for our prediction.
It was a surprise to see the main race contenders fight out the stage on Sunday, given it looked (like this) a stage for the more punchy breakaway riders. That does add plenty of intrigue here, but we're sticking to our guns and leaning towards the GC boys keeping their powder dry.
Raul Garcia Pierna already has a pair of top-five finishes at La Vuelta, one from a break, one from a strong ride in the peloton. He is no threat to the overall contenders, which will be to his benefit
We liked Jay Vine on Stage 9, but he was never really in contention. With a Category 3 and early points here, it would be no surprise to see him try to get up the road to add to his King of the Mountains lead.
Others to consider are the usual breakaway artists like Lorenzo Fortunato, Sean Quinn and Marco Frigo, all of whom have been to the fore in climbing stages already in the race.

- The opening stage after the rest day is a 175.3km long stage through Northern Spain.
- Two categorised climbs await the riders, a Category 3 and a Category 1 to the line, though most of the stage is a gradual climb.
- This is a last hurrah in a Grand Tour for Raul Garcia Pierna riding for Arkea before he joins Movistar in 2026. The chance to show what he is capable of in his home race will be a huge driver for him.
- Garcia Pierna picked up his first professional win this year, and his dad finished 21st or better overall in nine of the 10 Vueltas he rode, so success here is in the family.

Stage 10 is a tricky affair, but with stages 13 and 14 up in the high mountains, we'll take the chance that the general classification hopefuls are going to be keeping their powder dry coming out of the rest day on Monday.
