Tatjana Maria, fourth seed, and the unseeded Katie Volynets will battle each other next at the Thailand Open. They will square off in the second round with the winner taking on either Wang Yafan or Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the quarterfinals. Katie Volynets is making her debut in Hua Hin. She started things off on the right note and defeated Tamara Zidansek in straight sets in the first round. This was her seventh victory in nine outings this season. The American has however been competing in the lower circuits and made her season tour debut in Melbourne. Volynets is now up seven places to 118th in the live ranking.

Tatjana Maria defeated Volynets the only other time they were paired up against one another. This was on hard courts two seasons ago in the ITF circuit. As she is more experienced on tour level than the American, she will be confident of success here. The German also won her first-round match in straight sets. She defeated the qualifier Ariane Hartono by the loss of four games to register her third win of the campaign. Maria has played five times so far in 2024. Last season, the three-time tour champion made the quarterfinals in Hua Hin. It was her debut appearance. Despite her decent start to the year, the 36-year-old has dropped four places to 48th in the live ranking.
