Katie Boulter and Magda Linette, both unseeded, will battle in the first round of this year’s Cincinnati Open. They clash on Tuesday for their first career meeting and the winner will play Liudmila Samsonova or Wang Xinyu next. Read on for the stats leading up to this match and our prediction.

Katie Boulter has struggled in recent weeks and will be hoping for a turnaround in Cincinnati. The Briton lost five of her last 10 matches and has found it hard since the season switched from grass.

Boulter, who has won two titles this year on grass and hard courts, is coming off a third-round exit in Toronto. Her run in Canada saw her move up two places in the live ranking and now starts the week placed 31st.

Magda Linette also participated in Toronto this past week. The Pole lost in straight sets to eventual semi-finalist Emma Navarro in the second round. Though she has won just three more matches than the 20 she lost, Linette has had a strong year.

She has competed in two tour finals for the first time in a single season since 2019. The 32-year-old won in Prague to end a four-year wait for a tour crown. This success, however, was achieved on clay, while she has struggled on hard courts.

The current world number 43 won just four of the 14 matches she has played on hard courts. This poor run will not inspire much confidence towards her first-round match in Cincinnati. Linette has never won a main draw tie in this WTA 1000 event.
