After receiving a bye into round two, world number 14 Holger Rune had a tough match against Matteo Berrettini. He lost the first set to the unseeded Italian but won the next two for the loss of seven games.
Rune remains 14th in the live rankings and is a place below that in the ATP Race. He has reached two hard court semi-finals in recent months. The most recent of those was in Tokyo last week. His only appearance in a hard court final this year was in Brisbane nine months ago.
Jiri Lehecka sneaked into the seedings when Jack Draper withdrew from the tournament. The world number 34 has had two previous matches against Rune and is 1-1. He won their only match played on hard courts and this is their first meeting since 2022.
Lehecka has won one hard court title this year. That was in Adelaide in January and he went on to reach two more hard court quarter-finals. April saw him get to the last four of the clay court tournament in Madrid but he was injured during that tournament.
He didn't make his return until August but has shown some good form on this surface since then, including a win over Daniil Medvedev in Cincinnati. His most recent tournament saw him lose in the last eight in Tokyo being beaten by Jannik Sinner.
