Third seed Jessica Pegula will play the unseeded Kamila Rakhimova next as she continues her quest for another Canadian Open title. The two will face off in the third round to mark their first career meeting. Rakhimova hasn't gone past this round a lot this season, and our prediction here will back Pegula to win.
Pegula was crowned champion the last time she appeared at the Canadian Open two seasons ago. Having never failed to reach the semis at this event, Pegula will be confident of challenging for the title.
The American, who arrived in Toronto after a runner-up finish in DC, defeated Magdalena Frech in the second round. She fought her way back from 1-0 down to win and improve to a 38-10 record. Pegula, the world number three, has won two titles.
Rakhimova is having a strong debut in this WTA 1000 event and now seeks a third successive win. The Uzbek star defeated the veteran Venus Williams in the first round in straight sets.
In her follow-up fixture, things weren’t as straightforward, as Katerina Siniakova put up a stern fight before injury disrupted the tie. Rakhimova, who has now improved to 17 wins this season, has had a difficult year, having registered more defeats than wins.
After finding her way to the third round, for the first time at this level, Rakhimova has shot to 79th in the live ranking.
