Unseeded J.J Wolf will begin his Auckland Open campaign with a first-round duel with the qualifier Luca Van Assche. The winner will then play second seed Cameron Norrie in the second round. J.J Wolf began his season in Hong Kong but was bundled out in the first round. He will be eager to not suffer the same fate here. His head-to-head advantage over Van Assche will have him confident heading into this match. The American defeated Van Assche in their first-ever encounter which was on grass in Eastbourne last season. Wolf, who is ranked 53rd in the ATP, has compiled an 83-61 record on hard courts in his career.

Luca Van Assche lost in the first round as well in his opening tournament of the year in Brisbane. But as he has had a good runout in the qualifying rounds, he should have the momentum to get the better of Wolf. Van Assche defeated Jaume Munar in three sets to advance to this round and had to come from a set down to do so. He is now 2-1 to start the campaign. The young Frenchman isn’t a strong performer on hard courts. He has only once won more than two matches on the surface in a season since making his debut four seasons ago. Last year he lost seven of the eight matches he contested on hard courts. He is currently up three places to 87th in the live ranking.
