Recent weeks on hard courts have been frustrating for Daria Kasatkina and she hopes to rise at the US Open. The 12th seed starts her 10th appearance at the tournament with a first-round match against Jaqueline Cristian. Bookies’ predictions back Kasatkina against her unseeded opponent.
Jaqueline Cristian will play in the main draw at Flushing Meadows for only the second time. She debuted in 2022 but lost in her opener. That has happened repeatedly for the Romanian at Grand Slam level.
Only twice has she won her opening round fixture and so far this year she has lost in the first round at every major. The 26-year-old, on a shaky 24-24 record, has also lost three times in her last four matches. This run has her in 69th place in the live ranking.
Daria Kasatkina won both times she met Cristian, most recently in April on clay in Charleston. She won in three sets on her way to finishing as runner-up. The Russian will be looking at that for inspiration after struggling in the past three weeks.
Recently, she has seen her form take a turn for the worse. The 27-year-old, who is placed 13th in the live ranking, has won only one of her last five fixtures. This win was registered in Cincinnati where she went on to lose in the second round.
Having won the title in Eastbourne and made it to the final three times – twice on hard courts – will boost her confidence though. Kasatkina equaled her best-ever US Open run last year when she exited in the fourth round.
The winner here will face Peyton Stearns or Lesia Tsurenko next.
