Qualifiers Irene Burillo Escorihuela and Moyuka Uchijima will battle in the first round at the 2024 French Open. This is the first career meeting between these two and the winner will play Aryna Sabalenka or Erika Andreeva in the second round. Irene Burillo was in excellent form in the qualifiers and won all three of her matches without losing a set. She has now qualified for the main draw of a major for the first time. Before arriving in Paris, the Spaniard had lost four straight matches. Burillo, who has won over 200 matches on clay in her career, has compiled a 20-15 record this season. Twelve of her wins have come on clay but so too have nine of her defeats. Progressing to the main draw has catapulted Burillo a massive 42 places in the live ranking. Moyuka Uchijima is in red-hot form and will arrive for this match fully confident of a win. The Japanese player has won her last 18 matches. She also won all three of her qualifiers here without dropping a set to secure her Roland Garros main draw debut. Uchijima made her Grand Slam main draw debut last year at the Australian Open and is now seeking her first victory at this level. The 22 year old who is yet to play a tour-level main draw match this season, is having quite the year. She has compiled a dominant 40-9 record, resulting in five ITF titles. Uchijima, who has recorded 21 of her victories on clay, has moved into the WTA top 80 for the first time. She is now ranked 77th in the live ranking after making a six-place leap.
