Qualifier Ilinca Amariei is set to take on eighth seed Elsa Jacquemot in the first round of the Iasi Open. This will mark their first career meeting, and though Jacquemot ranks higher, a three-match losing run doesn’t earn her favor in this prediction.

Amariei is seeking her maiden victory on tour. The Romanian is expected to have the full support of the home crowd as she seeks a new career achievement.

To punch her ticket for the main draw this week, the 23-year-old won both of her qualifying fixtures in three sets. With that, she has improved to three wins in seven outings this term.

Amariei, who played her first match of the season last month, is ranked outside the WTA’s top-500.

Jacquemot will hope her tour pedigree gives her an advantage here. The Frenchwoman, who starts her run in Iasi up to 106th place in the live ranking, made her tour debut six years ago.

She has ended each of the last four seasons with over 30 wins, alternating between the tour and challenger circuits. This season, though, things have been tough.

The 23-year-old, who last played at Iasi three seasons ago, has managed just seven wins in 27 outings. She is currently on a three-match skid and has only won twice in the last 10 fixtures.
