Match 23 of the ICC T20 World Cup will see Sri Lanka take on Nepal on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions are currently bottom of Group D, while the Rhinos are fourth. Sri Lanka have made the worst possible start to their World Cup campaign and are potentially one defeat away from exiting the group stage. The Lions are coming off back-to-back losses, which began with a six-wicket thumping by South Africa, who bowled them out for a mere 77 runs in the 19th over, marking Sri Lanka’s lowest-ever total in T20 World Cup history. The Lions were slightly better in game two but suffered the same fate, losing to Bangladesh by two wickets. The only innings of any note so far was provided by Pathum Nissanka, who scored 47 in 28 balls against the Tigers. With the ball, Nuwan Thushara took a career-best 4/18 in the last match. Sri Lanka have lost six of their last ten T20Is, but the bookmakers have them down as the favourites in this one.

Meanwhile, Nepal are making their T20 World Cup debut this year and have only played one match so far in the competition. That match ended in a six-wicket defeat to the Netherlands last week when the Rhinos were bowled out for 106 in 19.2 overs. Rohit Paudel scored 35(37) but no other batsman managed to score over 20 runs in the innings. The Flying Dutchmen, led by Max O’Dowd, chased down the target with an over and two balls to spare. Nepal have now lost each of their last four T20 internationals in all competitions, with their last win coming against Saudi Arabia back in April. While very few are giving the Rhinos a chance here, based on Sri Lanka’s form, they cannot be entirely written off.
