Tenth seed Hubert Hurkacz has already won one clay court title this year. He now takes on eighth seeded Casper Ruud for a place in the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals. Hurkacz won the Estoril title last Sunday and is now up to a career high seventh in the live rankings. He had a tough match in the first round of this outdoor clay court Masters 1000 tournament. The Pole had to go to a final set to get past unseeded Jack Draper. He dropped the middle set and needed a tie-break to win the decider. That took him into a second round match against qualifier Roberto Bautista Agut. He won in straight sets but it took him 25 games to do so. Hurkacz is bidding to reach his second quarterfinal in Monte Carlo having previously got that far in 2022.

Casper Ruud is 1-1 with Hurkacz in previous meetings. His win was two years ago, winning in four sets on clay at Roland Garros. Ruud is ninth in the live rankings and has lost at this stage in Monte Carlo for the last two years. Before that in 2021 he got to the semifinals of this clay court tournament. Ruud has won nine ATP clay court titles and reached five other finals including two at Roland Garros. This year has seen him lose in two hard court finals. His first clay court tournament of the year was in Estoril and he lost in the last four to Pedro Martinez. In his only match here so far this week, Ruud beat unseeded Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets. We go for this match to go to three sets.
