Himeno Sakatsume produced a stunning result over the fourth seed, Sofia Kenin, in the first round. Facing off with the former Australian Open champion for the first time, Sakatsume won in straight sets with just three games lost.

She has now won three consecutive fixtures without dropping a single set. Sakatsume, who arrived in Hong Kong on a three-match losing run, has improved to 40-22 and risen to 200th in the live ranking. The 24-year-old has won twice against Chong.

Eudice Chong defeated Sakatsume in Hong Kong last year, but in the challenger circuit. She would go on to win that tournament and will hope for a domino effect this week.

The Hong Kong athlete, competing in her hometown tour event for the fourth time, defeated Suzan Lamens in the first round. She won in straight sets to register her first victory at a tour tournament.

Chong, who broke a run of four consecutive losses with her first-round victory, has improved to 14-13. She has also shot up a massive 29 places in the live ranking but remains outside the top 500.
