Jasmine Paolini, the 12th seed at the French Open, will play lucky loser Hailey Baptiste in the second round of the competition. The winner of this second career meeting between them will then play Anna Kalinskaya or Briana Andreescu next. Hailey Baptiste defeated Paolini in their only encounter to date. This was three years ago at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic. She will have this at the back of her mind as she targets to progress past the second round for the first time at a major. The American, who lost her last qualifying round match, defeated compatriot Kayla Day in three sets in the first round. She battled from a set down to claim the victory which improved her record to 27-15. Baptiste, who has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits, has yet to win multiple times at a tour event. Advancing to this round has propelled her nine places to 98th in the live ranking.

Jasmine Paolini is also seeking to progress past the second round at Roland Garros for the first time. The Italian is having one of her best seasons at tour level and will be confident of managing a win here. Before this season, Paolini had never progressed past the second round at a major. This changed at the Australian Open where she produced a fourth-round finish. Paolini would then go on to win the title in Dubai, her first career WTA 1000 title. So far this season, she has compiled a 17-10 record and has claimed five wins in eight outings on clay. Now up to 14th in the live ranking, Paolini began her run in Paris with a straight sets victory over unseeded Daria Saville.
