Grigor Dimitrov is the ninth seed for the Madrid Masters. He received a first round bye and begins his campaign against unseeded Jakub Mensik. Round three will see the winner of this match face either the 19th seed Adrian Mannarino or unseeded Felix Auger-Aliassime. Dimitrov last reached the quarter-finals of this outdoor clay court tournament nine years ago. A win over Mensik will see him in round three for the third year in a row but he's not got past that stage. He's ranked tenth in the world and eighth in the Live ATP Race. This is his second clay court tournament of 2024, the other being in Monte Carlo where he lost to Holger Rune in the last 16. This is the first match he's played against his young opponent.

Jakub Mensik hadn't played in any ATP clay court tournament in 2024 until this week. The 18-year-old has been getting some good results on hard courts, including reaching the final in Doha. His first ever Madrid Masters began with a straight sets victory over Yannick Hanfmann, though he needed a tie-break to win the second. That win took him to 69th in the live rankings which equals his career-high. He's 43rd in the Live ATP Race. Mensik has won a couple of Challenger Tour clay court events but this will be a tough match for him.  We tip Dimitrov to get the victory.
