Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, fifth seed, will look to get back to winning ways when he takes on unseeded Gregoire Barrere in Marseille. The two will battle in the first round with the winner next playing either Luca Van Assche or Emil Ruusuvuori. Gregoire Barrere has had an unconvincing start to the year and has lost more than double the matches he has won. He has so far compiled a 2-5 record and has suffered two of his defeats on indoor hard courts. The Frenchman is coming off of a second-round elimination in Montpellier. Barrere is making his fifth Marseille appearance. He has twice been eliminated in the first round here and has never progressed past the second hurdle. The 29-year-old has dropped to 105th place in the live ranking. Barrere favours playing on indoor hard courts and has won 198 matches on the surface in his career.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has started the season more promisingly and has won three of his four matches so far. All four matches have been on hard courts. The Spaniard has taken a two-week break to refresh since he last was on the court. This was in Melbourne where he made the Australian Open second round. Davidovich Fokina isn’t a dominant performer on indoor hard courts but having defeated Barrere before, he will be confident of a win here. The two battled in the qualifying rounds in Marrakech five seasons ago for their only encounter to date. This is Davidovich Fokina’s second appearance in Marseille. He last competed here in 2021 but never got past the second round. The 24-year-old is currently down one place to 24th in the live ranking.
