World number 79 Greet Minnen and world number 114 Claire Liu will square off at the Miami Open qualifiers. The winner here will advance to the main draw of this WTA 1000 event. Greet Minnen has only once featured in the main draw in Miami in her previous two appearances. This was two seasons ago and she will be hoping to equal this feat. The Belgian has seen an upturn in fortunes recently after a troublesome start to the year. She has managed four wins in her last five fixtures. Minnen arrived in Miami after making the semifinals of the Charleston challenger. That momentum allowed her to win her first qualifying-round match against Hsieh Su-wei in straight sets. She has now won half of the 14 matches she has contested and is up to 77th in the live ranking. Minnen defeated Liu last season at Saint-Malo in the challenger circuit.

Claire Liu has had more success in this event than Minnen. She will hope her pedigree allows her to move into the main draw and provide the turning point for her season. The American has twice featured in the main draw in Miami and last season produced a third-round finish. This was her best-ever result at a WTA 1000 tournament. Liu has struggled with her form also this year and has so far compiled a 6-6 record. She lost in the qualifying rounds in San Diego and also Indian Wells before arriving at Miami Gardens. Liu defeated Kamila Rakhimova in the first round of these qualifiers. She had to dig deep after losing the first set and required a tiebreaker in the last set. Despite the win, Liu has dropped eight places in the live ranking to number 122.
