Second seed Alexander Bublik takes on qualifier Federico Augustin Gomez in round two of the hard court Chengdu Open. For the winner, their next opponent will be either eighth seed Roman Safiullin or Juncheng Shang. Here's our match prediction.
Bublik was a career-high 17th in May but has slipped down to 27th in the latest list. In fact, he hasn't won a match since the second round of Wimbledon with five consecutive defeats, the last three on hard courts.
His most recent defeat was in the Davis Cup last week. He was beaten by Elmer Moller who was ranked 247th in the world at the time. Bublik lost in round one of the US Open, beaten by possible quarter-final opponent Juncheng Shang.
The 27-year-old will want to recapture the form he showed in the first couple of months of 2024. He won the hard court tournament played in Montpellier, reached the last eight in Doha and was runner-up in Dubai.
Federico Augustin Gomez was down at 174th in the latest published ranking list. His run to this second round in Chengdu has seen him rise to a new career-high of 158th in the live rankings.
Gomez had to win two qualifying matches to reach the main draw. He won both of those in straight sets and in round one of the main draw, the Argentinian beat unseeded Alexandre Muller, again without dropping a set.
That was only his second match this year in the main draw of an ATP Tour event. He lost the other one in the Cordoba clay court tournament. Clay is his preferred surface and he's won two Challenger Tour events this year.
