Stage 19 was expected to be fireworks but ended up as a bit of a damp squib with very little attacking going on it is all down to Stage 20 in the quest for the Maglia Rosa, so let's make a prediction on the stage.

Perhaps Richard Carapaz was playing things cautiously on Stage 19 as he took a long time to attack leader Isaac del Toro, who had little issue going with the EF Education - Easypost rider, who was not his usual swashbuckling self. This is the toughest stage of the Giro so he may have been saving his energy for this.

The pair pulled far enough clear to think that the winner of the race overall will come from this pair. The climb up the Colle delle Finestre is the only haut category climb of the entire Giro so this is the chance that will need to be taken.

It will be interesting to see if anyone further down, the pecking order has a real go. Egan Bernal, Giulio Pellizzari and Einer Rubio are sat in 6th, 7th and 8th heading into this stage. With more than five minutes to make up on the leader, they might get a little more rope to escape and could sneak closer to a top-five spot.

Stage 20 is one of the longer stages with more than 200 km to cover.
The Colle delle Finestre is more than 18 km long, has an average gradient of more than 9% and the last 40% of the climb is on gravel, it is absolutely brutal.
2018 was the last time that the Colle delle Finestre was used. Chris Froome attacked early to win the stage and the overall title.
Four riders in the 2025 Giro finished in the top 10 that day. They are Richard Carapaz (2nd), Davide Formolo (7th), Patrick Konrad (9th) and Pello Bilbao (10th).

It was disappointing not to see Richard Carapaz attack as hard as expected on Stage 19 but perhaps he has kept his powder dry for this stage as it is as difficult as it gets. It would be very unusual for him to be as passive as he was on Friday's stage again and given that he has experience of going up the Colle delle Finestre, that is a massive plus for his winning stage claims over Issac del Toro. Our Giro d'Italia Stage 20 prediction is a win for Richard Carapaz.
