Stage 19 of the Giro will have a massive say in who wins the race. Although Stage 20 has the only hors category climb, Stage 19 is tougher overall. Roughly 40 of the last 70 km of the stage are uphill so our prediction has to be one of the mountain goats!
These brutal stages are where the South Americans shine. The big question is whether it will be the main GC contenders who head up the final climb to contest the stage win or a breakaway group.
Isaac del Toro in just his second grand tour has the Maglia Rosa on his back. He won Stage 17 but he looked in trouble when Richard Carapaz attacked on the Mortirolo, getting back on in the valley before outsprinting his main rival for outright glory.
Carapaz has looked exceptional in the mountains and he will be attacking hard here. He looks like the climber in the best form and only has 10 seconds in the standings himself over Simon Yates. That will mean that he is going to be in all-out attack mode on this stage.
Other GC riders who will need to win to have any hope of overall glory are Derek Gee, Damiano Caruso and Egan Bernal while Romain Bardet, Daniel Martinez, Nairo Quintana and Diego Ulissi will all be hoping to get on the attack.

Giro - Stage 19 - Giro d'Italia prediction key points
- Stage 19 is 166 km long and is one for the pure climbers.
- Three Cat 1 climbs, a Cat 2 and a Cat 3 will await the riders with almost 5000m of elevation to climb.
- Carapaz has put del Toro under pressure already this week. This is the hardest stage so far and these are the climbs where Carapaz shines.
- The 2019 Giro was won by Richard Carapaz who has also won the King of the Mountains at both the Tour de France and La Vuelta.
