The Pumas will face off against the Golden Lions in week two of the 2024 Currie Cup at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday evening. The hosts currently lead Pool B with five points while the visitors are second with four points after the first round of matches.
Last season’s runners-up, the Pumas, got their 2024 Currie Cup campaign off to the perfect start as they secured a commanding 44-24 victory over Griquas in Kimberley last weekend. They were the better side throughout the 80 as they shot out to a 25-12 lead by halftime and were not to be caught.
Pumas ran in a total of six tries with each of Eduan Swart, Stefan Coetzee, Ruwald vd Merwe, Etienne Janeke, Ross Braude and De-an Ackermann crossing the whitewash. Clinton Swart added 14 points off the boot, with four conversions and two penalties.
The side from Mpumalanga have been the more successful side in this matchup, winning five of the last six encounters, including a 34-27 win at this venue last season.
Meanwhile, the Lions also made a positive start to their Currie Cup campaign, earning a hard-fought one-point victory over the Sharks in Durban last week.
The Lions went into the half-time break at the Shark Tank 10-8 down but fought back well in the second period. Kade Wolhunter, Jarod Cairns, and Morne Brandon crossed the try line for the Lions, while Wolhuter also added 11 points off the boot.
The Johannesburg-based side only managed a sixth-placed finish last season but did beat this opponent on their home patch.
