Feyenoord vs Celtic Prediction & Betting Tips - Champions League
by Joseph King |
The Champions League is back for the 2023/24 season with a rematch of the 1970 final to kick off the group stage. Dutch champions Feyenoord take on Scottish giants Celtic with both sides eyeing a top two finish in what is a very manageable group. La Liga side Atletico Madrid and Italian club Lazio make up the other two teams in Group E. An early three points would go a long way towards one of these two teams qualifying for the round of 16. Will either side be able to take advantage or will they share the spoils in the group stage opener?

Feyenoord - Celtic: Form Analysis
Feyenoord are coming off a fantastic season which saw them win only their second Eredivisie title in the 21st century. They’ve experienced an unbeaten start to the new domestic season and currently sit third with three wins and two draws from five matches. Feyenoord, who triumphed over Celtic to win the European Cup in 1970, are competing in the group stages for the first time since the 2017/18 season. De club aan de Maas have really kicked things into high gear over their last three matches, recording two separate 6-1 wins and a 5-1 win. Their 17 goals scored in the past 270 minutes of play will have acted as the perfect preparation for their Champions League opener. They’ll now look to replicate that form in front of the home fans as they attempt to get an early three points on the board.
Celtic have also experienced an unbeaten start to the new league season. The Bhoys are the defending Scottish Premier League champions and have won 11 of the past 12 league titles. They’ve racked up four wins and a draw for an early two point lead atop the SPL table. Their last outing was a comfortable 3-0 home win over Dundee while the fixture prior to that saw them run out 1-0 winners away to Rangers. They’ve now won their last two on the bounce and have recorded three consecutive clean sheets. It presents an interesting matchup here with Celtics immovable defense coming up against the unstoppable attack of their Dutch opponents. Celtic, who lifted the European Cup in 1967, are participating in the group stages of Europe’s most prestigious club competition for the second straight year.

Feyenoord & Celtic Squad Analysis
Feyenoord manager Arne Slot will have to do without the services of star striker Santiago Giminez as the Mexican international serves a two match ban. It’s a bitter blow to the hosts as Giminez is the team’s top scorer with six goals and an assist in his five league appearances. To make matters worse for the hosts, Ayase Ueda will also be unavailable for this match after suffering an injury on international duty with Japan. This leaves Feyenoord likely needing to field an improvised striker in the form of one of their wide players which will undoubtedly hurt their attacking threat.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will be without three players for the trip to the Netherlands on Tuesday. Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers misses out as well as forward Marco Tilio. Wide man Liel Abada is a long term absentee as the Israeli international is set for a few months on the treatment table. Japanese international Kyogo Furuhashi should continue to lead the line for Rodgers’ team after netting in his last two club appearances.
Feyenoord - Celtic Key Points
- Feyenoord have won their last three matches in a row which includes two straight at De Kuip.
- Celtic have looked a bit suspect on the road, losing 1-0 to Kilmarnock in the League Cup and giving up three clear cut scoring chances away to Rangers.
- The visitors have failed to score in two of their last four appearances.
- The last five consecutive matches for Celtic have all finished with under 4.5 goals.
- Feyenoord are without Santiago Gimenez, who is responsible for five of the 17 goals that the hosts have scored over the last three games.
