Sixth seed Lorenzo Sonego continues with his Metz title defence and will on Thursday battle the wildcard Fabio Fognini. The two will meet in the quarterfinals with the winner going on to play either Ugo Humbert or Harold Mayot. Fabio Fognini has seen an upturn in form in recent weeks and has now won four of his last five matches. He defeated Alexander Bublik in three sets in the last round. The match lasted close to three hours and saw the final two sets require tiebreakers. The win was his 21st of the season and four in six outings on indoor hard court. If he wins on Thursday, the veteran Italian will tie his season record at 22-22. Fognini is up 16 places to 131st in the live ranking.

Lorenzo Sonego is the defending Metz champion. He triumphed here last season without dropping a set. This year however he has already relinquished one set. This was the first set in the first round against Marcos Giron. In the last round, however, he looked a bit more assured as he subdued Abedallah Shelbayh by the loss of eight games. The 30th win of a rocky campaign for him allowed him to move up two places to 47th in the live ranking. Sonego has lost the same number of games as he has won this year.
