Fabio Fognini and Botic van de Zandschulp, both unseeded, are set to meet once again at the French Open. This Monday encounter will be a first-round tie. Fabio Fognini lost to Van de Zanschulp here two seasons ago. He was forced to retire in the third set of their second-round duel and should use this as motivation to progress here. The veteran Italian is back for the 16th consecutive season at Roland Garros. In his previous 15 appearances, he has lost a first-round tie only three times and has recorded one quarter-final finish. Last year, he qualified for the third round. The 37-year-old is having a shaky season alternating between the tour and challenger circuits. He has compiled a 12-11 record though eight of his wins have come on clay. A former world number nine, Fognini starts his week ranked 93rd in the ATP.
Botic van de Zandchulp had won the first two sets of his duel with Fognini here two seasons ago before the premature conclusion. Having the head-to-head advantage in this matchup should have him confident of another victory despite his struggles. The Dutchman has compiled a 12-16 record and has lost seven times in 14 outings on clay. He has also been alternating between the tour and challenger circuits and has yet to win more than one match at an event. Van de Zandschulp, who is coming off a second-round exit in the Bordeaux Challenger, has dropped in the world rankings. He starts the week in 102nd place in the ATP. The 28-year-old was defeated in the first round at last year’s Roland Garros edition, his first opening-round loss at the tournament. The winner from this game will face Pedro Cachin or Tommy Paul next.
