An unseeded player will make it through to the last four of the Monterrey hard court tournament. That's because unseeded pair Lulu Sun and Erika Andreeva meet in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Here's our match prediction.
Lulu Sun is the higher ranked of the two players and was 57th in the latest published list. Her run to the last eight in Monterrey has taken her up to a new career-high of 51st. A win here will see her climb to 48th position.
It's a great achievement by the New Zealander who was outside the top 200 when this year got underway. Her best performance was making it to the Wimbledon quarter-finals but she's more than capable on hard courts too.
Two ITF tournaments have been won and last week saw her get a win over Linda Noskovia in Cincinnati. This is her first WTA Tour hard court quarter-final This week has seen her beat Chloe Paquet and Maria Lourdes Carle, the latter requiring three sets.
Erika Andreeva has also set a new career high this week. The Russian is up to 75th in the live list and can climb another 12 places if reaching the last four. The 20-year-old is in her first quarter-final of 2024 and had a real fight on her hands in round two.
After a straight sets win over Anna Kalinina in round one, Andreeva took on top seed Danielle Collins next. That didn't start well with only one game being won in the opening set. Andreeva fought back to win the next two, both being won 6-3.
We believe this should be a close match and a tie-break looks possible. Our main prediction is for over 21.5 games to be played.
